Who will come out to evaluate your project?
Ben Snape, the owner of Milltown Excavation & Landscape, will come out to evaluate your needs, draft estimates and plan the logistics of your project with you.
What do excavation projects cost?
Each project is priced individually. There is no one size fits all price for each person's project.
Do you have all the needed equipment or do you have to rent it?
We have all the equipment we need to handle most projects. If there are circumstances that require equipment we do not own then we can rent it from one of the many rental companies we have built relationships with.
Having heavy equipment on my property may cause damage, how do you take care of this?
Heavy equipment does mean a potential for damage to occur to your grass and garden beds. We try to mitigate the amount of damage to turf and soils and repair it at the end of the project, if needed. We will lay all of this out in our estimates and proposals.
My friend has a machine to do the project but no time to help me. Would running his machine save me some of the costs?
Unfortunately we will not operate the owner or friends of the owners' machinery for you. There are several reasons as we cannot guarantee the reliability of that machine, safety and damage liability.
Do you clean up the site and replant grass afterwards?
It's up to the individual customer's needs. We are absolutely able to plant grass and fully clean up a site to make it look as if we were never there. Usually site cleanup is in our estimates as an option.
How do I prepare for an excavation contractor?
Do what you can to make the area accessible as possible. If that's beyond your capabilities, make sure you let the excavating company know ahead of time what obstacles they may face. You should also move anything on the property that will be in the way, if at all possible.
Should utilities be marked before the excavation contractor comes?
We handle calling Dig Safe to mark out the utilities. Any private utilities (dog fences, private electric lines, etc.) should be marked by the homeowner if possible. Depending on the scope and location of the project we will also call local town departments to mark water, sewer and storm drainage lines.
What are some signs I need a new septic system?
Some red flags are worse than others. For instance, you may just have slow drains, but you may also have sewage backing up into your home. Look for bright green grass near the septic tank, smell for bad odor, and listen for gurgling sounds. When in doubt, call a pro to do an assessment.
Do I need a retaining wall?
Aside from enhancing the visual aesthetics of your yard, retaining walls can serve a number of purposes. The purpose is to hold back, or retain, soil and that's most commonly done to either manage water runoff or provide usable land. It can also be used for preventing soil erosion. Feel free to set up an appointment with us and we can walk you through many options.
Do I need to obtain permits or will your company?
This all depends on the individual situation however we are happy to obtain permits on your behalf.
Why are you always booked for 2-4 months? I need my project done now!
We operate on a first come, first serve basis and leave some room open to emergency work. Depending on the project we may be able to fit things in sooner however your patio being done before summer is not an emergency. If your yard fills with sewage this is an emergency. We are willing to work with anyone who is willing to work with us and our schedule.
